Comments that have fertilized the inadvertent garden

Over at ProBlogger this week, Darren Rowse is hosting a group blogging project focused on lists. I thought I’d take the opportunity to participate by looking back at a selection of ways commenters have helped me and Steve through our first season of gardening.

This is by no means a ranked or comprehensive selection–I’ve been amazed at the breadth and depth of the comments that have come my way through the blog, and these are just some of the highlights. Thanks to everyone who has helped out, and I hope you continue to offer advice–one of the coolest things about this garden blogging experience is watching people find their way to the site because they’re looking for answers about their own gardening problem. I might not be able to help them, but my commenters definitely have provided plenty of advice that did the trick!

• Becky and Steven gave good explanations of why you shouldn’t put wood ash in the garden.
• Farmgirl pointed out, early on, that not only were we going to need a shovel, we also should look into getting ourselves a hoe.
• Flatbush Gardener helped me identify one of my disco bugs.
• Steven and Carol gave great ideas of what to do about bean leaf beetles.
• Jenn encouraged us to keep our mint well contained.
• Melissa gave great advice on how to salvage some positivity from our black walnut fiasco.
• Maggie informed us that fox urine does not keep rabbits and chipmunks and squirrels (oh my) out of the garden.
• A whole mess o’ commenters gave me the scoop on Pytophpthora.
• Corina pointed out that oniony herbs don’t mix well with tomato plants.
• Hanna of This Garden Is Illegal alerted me that tomato hornworms can be donated to school classrooms for research purposes.
• Tracy informed me that, even when things look bad, the cucumber plant ought to keep producing.
