Seed cuisine

Spinach seedsLate last week, I swung by the Co-op to pick up a few dinner items, and stopped by the Seed Savers rack to see what interesting seeds there might be available. I selected a packet of spinach seeds, planning to plant them shortly, and threw them into my basket.

“What did you get for dinner?” Steve asked when I got home.

I tossed him the packet of seeds.

“Here you go,” I said. “Spinach seeds. To sprinkle on salad.”

“Is it the hot new thing in dining?” Steve asked. “To get back to where it all started? Eating the seeds instead of the vegetable?”

“Absolutely,” I said.

“Well,” he said. “After all, we do eat eggs.”

I may as well eat the seeds. I’ve never been able to grow spinach but I keep trying. I just planted some on Sunday…. yet again…
I think I plant it too late so this is a month earlier than normal….we’ll see

The egg comment is pretty funny.

Some seeds are good to eat, but spinich? I think they would be a bit too crunchy. You should have made Steve try them anyway!

It might be too much to sprinkle them on the salad (lettuce AND spinach seeds?). Perhaps you could try your hand at making spinach seed bagels or muffins. ;-)

Katie, I’m going to try to plant ours this weekend and see how it goes…I didn’t plant any last spring, so this time around, I’m giving it a try.

Marc, I was amused, too. You know…we’re having salad tonight, though. Maybe I could just throw some on there…

Susan, thanks for stopping by! Spinach seed muffins…hmm…this is an interesting proposition. With a little feta mixed in? Could be a new discovery…

Um … I think I would rather plant them than eat them! Your husband had a great comment with the egg. That is one thing that veggie that I know I can grow here! While I have no problems with flowers, I have never quite had the knack for growing veggies. Herbs, yes, peas, beans and corn … yikes!

I’d rather plant them than eat them, too! We’ll see how we do with veggies from seed this year — I’m definitely going to keep my local garden centers in reserve as a back-up plan if the seeds don’t work.

Have anyone tried to make spinach sprout (like alfalfa sprout) and eat it?
i am really curious, since it’s from the same amaranthacea family. I make amaranth sprout and eat it.

Dui, that’s a really intriguing idea! I didn’t realize you could do that with amaranth sprout, but I’m guessing all this would be really tasty…
