If Oprah likes it, it must be good

Last night, Steve took me to the Lincoln Cafe in Mount Vernon, Iowa, for my birthday. I’d been dying to go there since my friend Amy sent me a copy of an article in the May 2004 issue of O Magazine profiling the chef and highlighting the restaurant.

The food was fabulous, just as I’d hoped. The restaurant generally has three entree specials, all featuring seasonal and/or local ingredients, and from the first bite of salad to the last bite of dessert, it was a fabulous meal. Steve had the quail, I had the pork chop.

We took a bottle of Wallace Winery’s Joan’s Cuvee, a bottle that I bought back in April and had been saving for a special occasion. Yes, you skeptics out there (and I used to be one of your number)…this wine was made in Iowa, and was good enough to save for a special occasion.

The waitress was kind enough to take our picture just before we dug into dessert. Notice the book next to my arm? It was one of my presents, and I’ve already dug into the first two chapters.

Happy Birthday from a fellow July 13th birthday person. It really is the best of the other 364 days.

Wow — happy birthday to you, too, Trey! I’m honored to share the day with such an accomplished garden guy. Hope you had a great celebration, as well.

Thanks, Steven! The wine’s good stuff — I’m pretty impressed with the operation this guy has going on.

Happy belated birthday–I’m a shmuck. Sorry. xo

Hey Corina — schmuck, you are not! :-) Good to see you, and thanks for the good wishes!

Worse, I can’t spell schmuck and I’m half Jewish. Ah, well, at least I got it half right. I took some pics of our pumpkin patch at the cabin this weekend–thought of you…xoxo

Ooh…a pumpkin patch, Corina? We had thoughts of putting something like that in this year, but then decided that might be a bit much. Email me a pic if you get a chance — I’d love to see it. Do you have baby pumpkins yet?
