I returned last night from a three-day, rather grueling business trip to the Chicago area. As I was driving back to Iowa City along I-88 near Dixon, Illinois, I noticed something scampering across the highway.
Then I realized it wasn’t so much scampering…as hopping.
Across. The. Road.
It was a rabbit. A rabbit who is as comfortable playing Frogger in 80 mph traffic as, no doubt, with someone’s mesclun mix.
I was tired enough that it took me a second or two to process what I was seeing, and then another second to pass it entirely.
Then it took me one last second to begin kicking myself for not speeding up when I first saw it. After all, I might have been able to help a fellow gardener.
When I got home, the rabbit that used to live in the mesclun mix was hanging out. In the great wide open of my garden plot. Where the mesclun mix used to be.
I considered getting my car, but the sidewalk from the driveway to the back yard is a bit too narrow.

A hundred points if you hit the deer that’s eaten half of my garden this season….
Lydia, I feel your pain…so far, I’m so lucky not to have deer…
Hi! You almost got it! I ROFLOL at your prose. THANK YOU. Again, small world – Dixon is where my DH was raised! Thank you for your laughter!
We all have our bunnies. Mine are snails. They are a lot slower than bunnies and provide that all so satisfying crunching noise.
LMBO, I now understand why I see cars swerving TOWARDS the bunny that sits just outside a local field near the road. Undoubtedly a cousin of the Illinois bunny clan. RUN BUNNY RUN! Would I be sadistic if I said I salted the slugs?
I recently chased a bunny out of a neighbor’s plot and it hid under a car…
LindaK–It’s a small world! Glad to provide a laugh…it was a bizarre moment, for sure!
Chigiy–So far, other than the one slug I saw, I have not had a snail invasion. But we’ll see…I am keeping my fingers crossed that doesn’t happen.
Emma–I don’t think you’re sadistic…just trying to keep things organic. At least you’re not wasting beer!
Sandia–You get a gold star for protecting your neighbor’s plot, definitely!
Thankfully all the rabbits here seem to stay in the parks and away from gardens. I’d have loved to see a video of you had you attempted ridding your garden of one of these bratty little critters. Why can’t they be content to nibble on grass?
Kate, if they liked grass, it would be perfect. No lawnmowers would be required around here…
And if there’s ever video of me dispatching a bunny (either by chasing or BB), I will happily post it. That is my solemn vow.
