One of my first experiences with the world d’web involved putting together a site and getting lots of national attention for it. Lots and lots of intoxicating national attention. Of course, this was back in the mid-1990s, so there weren’t that many sites out there, and no one really understood what The Internet was.
Now, it’s a crowded field, which means there’s a lot more competition for even a little bit of attention. I can’t remember what the exact statistic is, but I think something like one gillion people per day start a new blog. Here is what they write:
My First Post
Hi everyone! I just started a blog! I don’t know what it’s going to be about, but stick around and you’ll find out with me!!! Isn’t this exciting!!!!!!! In a minute, I’ll post some of my bad poetry!!!!!!!!!!
Well, no, that’s not exciting in the least. But there are some really great blogs out there (some even post good–not bad–poetry), and I think it’s good to give them the props they deserve. I’ve just done that for a few of my favorites by nominating them at The Best of Blog Awards. Nominations are open until February 16, with voting to take place thereafter.
One of the cool things about The Best of Blogs is that it’s designed to highlight the smaller blogs. The ones that generally don’t get noticed. The ones that aren’t in the Technorati Top 100, but that maybe should be. So go on, won’t you? Go nominate your favorites, too. Spread the love!
Update: Thanks, y’all! I’ve officially been nominated. Feel like voting for me? It would be much appreciated.

Well, I for one think TIG Enterprises (The Inadvertent Gardener and its partners and subsidiaries) deserve consideration. (I mean, if Stirrup Queens and Sperm Palace Jesters can get nominated….do you see what I’m saying?)
Nothing against the Stirrup Queens. I’m sure they’re cool.
But more to the point, I think the Surfing Public has one question that needs answering and I pose it here as it demands a response.
What (exactly) will you do for a good tomato?
I’m not sure I want to know what a Stirrup Queen is, really. Now, a Sperm Palace Jester…that is interesting to me. A little. Just in a curiosity sort of way. Or something.
As for the Surfing Public, I think it is clear to them what I will do. And how amazing it is. It’s really an ongoing story, unsummarizable into an elevator pitch. At least, that’s what I’m sticking to for now…
I saved this to come back to the BOB post later and when I did, suddenly found a “big grin” on my face! Thanks for the nomination!
You find yourself mentioned in the strangest places :-) A stirrup queen is a slang term for an infertile woman. The stirrups are of the gynecological variety. Perhaps not as exciting as you were imagining…
Alanna, you’re so welcome…and deserving!
Mel, thanks for the explanation — actually, that’s quite interesting, and I’ll have to go check out your blog. Thanks for stopping by!
